The velvet trend. It’s back, and better than ever in my opinion. We’ve seen this trend before (a lot during the 90s), but this season it’s different. Velvet has always been such a luxury fabric, so you’d see it most commonly in fancier dresses and evening wear. There are some amazing velvet dresses this season that will be great for more formal holiday events, but I love that the trend doesn’t stop there. This season velvet is being used in more casual pieces too, making it so much fun to pair a velvet midi dress with your everyday white tee and sneakers look.

It’s exciting to be part of a generation that loves to pick out past trends and bring them back in new ways. Last season the bomber jacket was really popular, and this season we are seeing velvet bomber jackets (wearing my velvet bomber in this post). And those velvet boots and booties no longer have to be saved for your holiday parties. Tying in velvet with your casual pieces is the point of this season’s trend. It’s all about mixing casual pieces with more luxurious velvet pieces. Think jeans and some velvet booties.

The easiest way to start adding velvet into your look is to start with one velvet piece (make it something you are comfortable wearing, like shoes or a jacket). You don’t need to add multiple velvet items to one look. Less is more with this trend. So if you are wearing your velvet heels, you don’t need to wear a velvet dress. Mix and match fabrics for a more contrasted look. And have fun with it. Like any trend, the key is to bring your own personality and style into it so that you feel comfortable in whatever you end up wearing.

Here are three ways to add velvet to your casual look:

1. Velvet dress over a white tee with gold sneakers

2. Distressed jeans with velvet booties and a sweater

3. Black distressed pants with a black shirt and a velvet bomber jacker

Here are the best velvet pieces I’ve seen this season:
