For my photoshoot for The October Dress, I wanted a dramatic smokey eye that wasn’t too over the top. I worked with celebrity makeup artist Lexi to come up with a concept for the perfect smoke eye. Something that would be perfect to wear with a fun Dark Queen or witches costume for your Halloween party that was still elegant. I’ve seen some cool Halloween inspired makeup, but many of the looks could only be worn with a dramatic costume. This look could work for a dressy cocktail party or to a concert as well!
Lexi used quality makeup products all found at Nordstrom to create my look. Nordstrom is such a great place for buying high quality makeup, because you can always return or exchange a color if it isn’t the perfect fit. They offer amazing beauty services like beauty stylist makeovers, fragrance samples, and it’s always my go to for holiday beauty gifts.
Nordstrom also caries such great colors for the perfect smokey eye look. We decided to go with a silvery black shadow on the lid to bring out the blue in my eyes. To keep your eyeshadow in place all night, prep your lids with this eyeshadow primer. This Urban Decay ‘Naked’ Palette has the best shades to capture this smokey eye! Use ‘Black Market’ on the lower lid and under the eye, mix the silvery shades of ‘Slanted’ and Armor’ on the upper lid with a touch of the silvery blue ‘Dagger’ shade on either side of the upper lid. The real drama comes from the clean cat eye angle from the outer corner of the eye moving toward the outer corner of the eyebrow. (hint: to get a perfectly clean straight line, place an index card or business card at an angle as you apply the eyeshadow to your outer lid) Lexi lined my upper and lower lids with black eyeliner, starting at my inner lid and angling out for a cat eye look. I’m so impressed with the quality of Charlotte Tilbury’s liquid eyeliner pencil. It goes on so smooth and sets after 30 second, so I don’t have to worry about it smudging under my eyes.
Lexi and I decided to go with a peachy nude lip so it wouldn’t overpower the eyes. She primed my lips with concealer and applied this MAC lipstick in ‘Doe’- its a smooth buttery texture and such a pretty peach shade. She added a glossy fuller look to the lips by adding a thin layer of Bobbi Brown Lip gloss in ‘Buff’. It’s a sheer gloss that tones down the peach color but still lets the color peak through.
To add some contour under the cheekbones, sides of the noes and forehead, this Anastasia Contour Kit has the best contour shades that work with an array of different skin colors. Lexi also went over my face and neck with bronzer to smooth out the final look. I’ve heard amazing things about Tom Ford’s makeup line but I haven’t gotten a chance to try it. This bronzer looks incredible and I think I want to try it out next time I’m in Nordstrom. Then she set the look with this Laura Mercier setting powder. To keep the look lasting all night, I am obsessed with Urban Decay’s All Nighter makeup setting spray. I use it after I do a full face of makeup and I swear by it! It helps my makeup stay in place for hours.
I think I might try and recreate this look for trick or treating on Halloween night! Also, if you missed my full post revealing The October Dress in new Monthly Dress Series, you can view the full post + tutorial here.
