HOW I PROMOTE A SPIRIT OF GIVING WITH MY KIDS DURING THE HOLIDAY

I asked Cash what he wanted most for Christmas last night as I was tucking him in bed. He said, “I just want for everyone to be happy and that we can all remember the true meaning of Christmas.” To which I responded, “I was thinking more along the lines of a toy…Santa really needs a final answer on this one”. I joke, I joke! I was blown away at such a candid and sincere response from a six year old.

As much as I love the presents and sweets and candy, I want to make sure my kids growing up remembering how they GAVE during the holidays more than what they GOT.

MY OLIVE GREEN PARKA (on sale for under $100, runs big)  ||  MY BEANIE (on sale for $12! Comes in lots of great colors)

A few things we have been trying to incorporate in our various activities this month that have helped lead to more of a spirit of giving:

Ask them to name 3 things they are grateful for on the way to school.

I always love doing words of affirmation on the way to school, but lately we’ve been saying things we are thankful for and it feel so appropriate during the holiday season!

Kids outerwear looks.

Let them pick out the gifts for their siblings.

It can be so tempting to grab sibling gifts for your kids while you’re trying to get all your shopping done, but it is so much more meaningful when Bradley is excited to give something to Cash that he picked out himself. Both my older boys wear a love of Abercrombie Kids, so this is an easy gift choice for us because I know my boys will love it. Their clothing is so well made and lasts through wash after wash. This year I’m letting my older boys pick out something to give to each other from there. Around this time of year Abercrombie Kids has some killer sales on our favorite items like their super soft jeans, long sleeve tees, and outerwear. I think it will be fun for them to see their sibling wearing something that they picked out!

Things I do to get my kids in the spirit of giving.

Have them help you make something to give to someone.

Cash loves to help me cook. I’m not a baker, but I signed up to bring cookies to a holiday concert last week, so I forced myself to make a batch of homemade peanut butter cookies. (I make homemade cookies once a year, only at Christmas!) I had Cash help me measure the flower and scoop out the dough, and then I had him deliver the cookies at the event. He was so proud of those dang cookies! That probably means I should bake more often 😉

Things I do to get my kids in the spirit of giving.

Simple acts of service.

I try to do one thing festive with the kids each day the month of December. This sounds overwhelming..but I keep it simple. We finish up homework early enough for a Christmas movie, make a paper countdown chain, read a Christmas story, etc. The other night we helped set up for our church Christmas party and that was one of my favorite things we have done so far! They got to see Garrett and I serving and they helped set up tables and chairs along with us. If you are donating toys for an organization, take your kids shopping with you and let them help! Bringing a meal to a friend? Let them help walk the food up to the door. Including them on acts of service that come along with this season makes for some of the best memories!

We ordered our Christmas cards this year from Minted, and I am so thrilled with them! They always have the prettiest card options and the quality of their cards is exceptional. This year I looked through all of their different holiday card options before we even shot our pictures for the card, to get an idea of the spacing we needed in the photo to fit the card. I love that Minted’s website allows you to filter all of the different holiday cards by photo orientation, number of photos you want on the card, Christmas, New Year, Religious, etc. I picked the orientation and Christmas card filters first, then loaded the picture I wanted to use into their system. This pulled up all the card options that would fit our image, and gave me a preview of what each card would look like with our image already in the card! It is such a brilliant system, and it really makes selecting our cards go so much faster.

I think my favorite part about using Minted for our holiday cards, is that they have a downloadable address spreadsheet to fill with all your addresses (I keep this on file all year and update it if we have friends/family that move). Then when I order my cards, I can easily upload this document to my order and it prints out all of our addresses on the envelopes! I always forget to order stamps for my cards and end up running to the post office for stamps at the last minute (which is the worst. I hate going to the post office!). So this year I ordered custom stamps from Minted too. I can’t believe what a breeze it was to get all my cards out this year! I opened our Minted box and had Cash help me put on all the stamps and lick the cards and I got them in the mail the SAME day we got the cards! That never happens. I swear Minted thinks of everything.

We shot our family pictures up in Big Bear this year, and I am so happy with how they turned out! I usually switch off between dressing in a formal look and casual each year, and since we were dressed more casual last year, I went with super formal this year. I just die over seeing my boys in their suits! My black dress is one of the prettiest and most intricate black dresses I have ever seen, and it makes for the perfect Christmas dress too. I wore it to church last Sunday and got so many compliments on it. I will be blowing up some of these to hang in our home for sure!

Garrett and I have been taking our boys on a “Polar Express” at Christmas time for the past 4 years now. Every time I mention it on my Instagram I get so many questions about the logistics of this tradition, so I thought it would be fun to share all the details on the blog! We just pick one night in December that falls on a day when the boys don’t have to get up super early the next morning. Some years we do it on a Friday, or wait until they are out for Christmas break. For the first few years we started off the night by watching The Polar Express movie, but honestly…I don’t love the movie. It gets pretty long and doesn’t hold their attention the entire time, so for the past few years we have just read The Polar Express book (I love it so much more this way). We have to start bedtime early this night and try to get them into bed with the lights off around 7:30. Then while we wait for them to all fall asleep, I make hot chocolate and pour it in little containers (Eli gets cold chocolate milk). Then I cut little “golden tickets” with gold/yellow craft paper with each of their initials on them.  At the foot of the stairs or outside their bedroom door, I lay out their shoes, hot chocolate, jackets, and their golden tickets into 3 little piles. Last year Cash ran out of his room and kicked over his hot chocolate and it was a hot mess…so the base of the stairs where they can see it all in advance worked much better for us this year.

Once they are asleep and I have everything set, Garrett starts the car, pulls it to the front of the house, and leaves it running to warm up. Then he turns on a loud train whistle and plays it on speakers or from his phone (he just googles “train whistle” and plays whatever comes up), and he yells “All aboard!,” and then runs and jumps in the car. I help the boys get their clothes on and they have to present their “Golden Ticket” to conductor dad before they can get into the car. Some years Garrett would hole punch their initials into their tickets as they got in the car. Super over the top and extra, and super adorable. Then we play Christmas music in the car while the boys drink/burn their tongues on their hot chocolate, and we drive around and look at the christmas lights for about 30-45 minutes. We have the same Christmas light route that we do every year. In Pasadena there is a huge pink mansion in one of the neighborhoods that completely decks out their entire place with lights. One side of the mansion is all Santa/reindeer, and the other side is a full life-size nativity scene. We get out and walk around all bundled in jammies and coats for the chilly 65 degree LA winter weather.

Basically it is all a fun way to go see Christmas lights, but the boys have come to love and look forward to it each year. This year they knew right away what night it was going to be when we pulled out The Polar Express book, and there was no way they were going to fall asleep (it will probably get harder and harder each year), but they were still just as excited to hear that train whistle. It’s a super simple tradition, but it might be my very favorite. I would definitely recommend trying it with your kids! And there is still time to start it this year! This would also make such a cute gift for a grandparent to give or for a family gift, with the book, golden tickets, and some packets of hot chocolate and mugs!

  • These Juicy tubes are always a big favorite, and 9 for $40 makes each tube less than $5 (they are originally $19 each!!). Great quality gift for your girlfriends.
  • How cure are these Kiehl’s mini masks? At a little over $12 per mask, these would be great stocking stuffers for daughters or sisters.
  • Such a darling rose gold mini brush set. Perfect to throw in a big purse for your girlfriend on the go! On sale for $29, originally $92!

December is quickly approaching (yay!), and that means parties and gift giving. I love dressing up, so this is one of my favorite times of the year. I love finding unique dresses to wear to holiday events, and I love finding unique gifts to give just as much. I found this beautiful emerald velvet dress a few weeks ago when I was looking through Modcloth’s site. Like almost every piece I’ve ordered from them…I liked it more when I got it and saw it in person. Velvet can be tricky; it can come across looking cheap if it isn’t done right. I was pleasantly surprised with how luxurious this dress looks at such a great price point. I very rarely pair green and red together for a holiday look (I usually opt for a red lip to take the place of a red clothing item), but I actually love the look of these satin deep red heels with the dress. The shade of red fits with the shade of green and comes across as a little unexpected, but it works and it’s festive!
I have a Secret Santa party with my girlfriends coming up next month, so I also checked out the gifting section of their site. I found so many unique things to give as gifts like this pretty ceramic dish set and these pretty marble earrings. A handful of my close girlfriends are cat obsessed and they would get a kick out of this cat ring holder. I also found this cool camera lens mug that would be so cute to give my photographer! I’m adding Modcloth to my list of stores to shop this year!

THE EASIEST GIFT TO GIVE THIS YEAR

There are so many special people in my life that I love to shop for, but I never want to overlook my kids’ teachers when it comes to gift giving. Sometimes I get so overwhelmed when it comes to finding them the perfect gift. These are the people who pour into my kids’ lives day in and day out, the ones my boys love dearly, and I know their memories with them will last forever. Their teachers work so hard during the year to help my boys, and I am so incredibly thankful for them. But gift giving to teachers can be tricky. It’s hard to know what their teachers really want or need, so I decided that the MasterCard gift cards from Gift Card Mall are the perfect solution.

Sometimes we just need a little “giftervention” to help us say thank you to the people we cherish. These gift cards are perfect for everyone on your list. They are easy to purchase, easy to use, and still allow you to add a personal touch when wrapping them up. For Bradley’s teacher we decided to add a few goodies into a basket with the gift card to tie it all together.

It’s so easy to purchase MasterCard gift cards, and all it takes is a quick stop at your local grocery store. There are several familiar stores that carry them, including Vons, Safeway, Kroger, Food Lion, Alberton’s, and other local grocery stores. If you still have gifts you need to pick up before Christmas, the MasterCard gift cards from Gift Card Mall are a no-brainer. They take the difficulty out of gift giving, and make it easy for anyone to give a great gift.

INSTAGRAM ROUNDUP

roundup-12-17-16-1SIMILAR SWEATER HERE, HERE, AND HERE  ||  BLACK PANTS  ||  INITIAL NECKLACE

It’s a good day when you wear a pink sweater to match your favorite cup right? I love this pink rose detail sweater, and I wish it were still available for you guys. But I linked to three other options that are just as pink and pretty. I absolutely love this leopard print pink sweater.

roundup-12-17-16-2SANTA SWEATSHIRT  ||  BLACK PANTS  ||  CLUSTER BRACELET  ||  GOLD BRACELET

Last I checked this pink Santa sweatshirt was only left in one size, so hurry if you’re looking for a fun (and cute) holiday sweatshirt! I love that it’s pink, so it was an easy pick for a holiday party I went to earlier this week. It’s always fun to find non-traditional holiday pieces that add an extra bit of style to your seasonal looks! I’m also loving this one with a bow and this red one (these both have more sizes available too).

roundup-12-17-16-4SIMILAR GREY SWEATER HEREHERE, AND HERE  ||  DISTRESSED JEANS  ||  SIMILAR NEW BALANCE SNEAKERS HEREHERE, AND HERE  ||  TURQUOISE RING

I’m a huge New Balance lover. They are the perfect shoe for throwing on with casual looks, and they come in so many great color combos. I love these maroon ones for the holiday season. This pair is very similar (under $70), and this pair has a little more holiday red coloring to them, and is on sale for $55! Shipping is free both ways for all three pairs I linked to above.

Believe it or not, this cream faux leather jacket that I love and wore all the time last spring, is still available in limited sizes, and it’s on sale for 33% off! My stripe top is another favorite of mine. The one I’m wearing is sold out, but this one is very similar (with a really cute tie neck) and it’s fully stocked for only $35!

roundup-12-17-16-6SIMILAR GREY SWEATER HERE, HERE, AND HERE  ||  DISTRESSED JEANS  ||  SIMILAR NEW BALANCE SNEAKERS HEREHERE, AND HERE  ||  TURQUOISE RING

This is the ultimate comfy basic look for me. A pair of distressed jeans, a sweater, and some sneakers. My sweater is sold out, but this one is very similar, fully stocked, and only $38. I also love this sweater because it’s a great length and super soft and cozy. It comes in four other colors too, and it’s less than $40!

By this point I’m pretty sure you know how much I love matching my phone case to my outfits (case and point here and here…no pun intended!). Today, instead of talking about which phone cases I love, I wanted to talk about which phone cases my friends and family would love. OtterBox makes so many different kinds of phone cases that would make great presents for everyone on your list this year!

If you are in the market for a new phone case, or you are shopping for a phone case for someone on your list, OtterBox is the way to go. For your girlfriend, the OtterBox Symmetry Series has some really cute girly options. This youthful purple polkadot print case would be perfect for your favorite babysitter (and it might just make her more available on the nights you need her…I’m not above bribery). This classic aqua striped case is what I’m giving to my sister-in-law, and they also make a similar option for the iPhone 6. My mom has a bit more sophisticated taste, so I think this burgundy leather case with a clear cover would be a perfect fit for her.

For the men in your life, OtterBox just released a new Strada Series line of limited edition cases for the iPhone 7 that are sleek, leather, and a bit more understated. Garrett is in the market for a new case, and I think this ultra slim cognac leather case is right up his alley. The Commuter Series cases are great for someone who is constantly moving and is really hard on their phone. They have an extra padded layer of protection for any drops or bangs.

With the iPhone 7 coming out this year, there are probably plenty of people on your list who could use a new case (or will be getting that phone upgrade for Christmas). A phone case is something everyone needs, and OtterBox is my go-to for well-made beautiful cases!

Also, I’m taking over OtterBox’s Insta Story today, and I will be giving you an up close look at these cases! You can tune in here.

I have found over the years that sometimes the easiest way to go for gift giving is accessories. There are so many fun accessories that are affordable and easy to customize for the person you’re buying for. Nordstrom is my favorite place to go to find cute accessories. They always have a great selection of both seasonal and non-seasonal hats, gloves, scarves, and clutches. And the best thing about buying accessories is you never have to worry about getting someone’s sizing right.

This is by far the best time of year to buy the people on your list a new hat, scarf, or pair of gloves. And who wouldn’t love opening a cute new clutch? Giving the gift of accessories is not only practical, it’s affordable and allows your style to come through in the types of items you choose. All of the accessories I found at Nordstrom are great price points, with gift giving made easy at around $30 or less. And because it’s Nordstrom, you can be sure quality is never sacrificed. I’d love to hear some of your favorite accessories to give or receive this time of year!

Christmas traditions. There are so many good ones, and I really love them all. But since we have had kids, getting the boys matching Christmas jammies each year might be my very very favorite (you can see last year’s matching jammies here). When I first had Bradley I thought Christmas jammies were cute…but multiply the same pair of pajamas by THREE and I’m just over here breathing into a paper bag; I can’t handle the cuteness.

I scoured online for some cute (but not too crazy) Christmas jammies that would work with all the boys, and I fell in love with these from Nordstrom. That Santa with no face?? I love him! I ordered these online because they didn’t have any in the store and they are such good quality.  They are thick with a tight high quality knit that my boys won’t destroy easily.

I really debated because my boys are obsessed with Star Wars right now, and this pair and this pair are just as cute! Eli loves Mickey and he would have flipped over this pair.

I also had to order myself a new pair of jammies too. I’ve bought this same pair of jammies just in different colors for three years in a row. They are by far my favorite. They are soft like silk, but made of modal knit (top of the line). They last through hundreds of washings and don’t fade. Hop over to Nordstrom and grab your kiddos and yourself some new Christmas jammies!

I love a classic look, especially during the holidays. No matter what the occasion this season, classic looks like a black lace dress, simple black pumps, and a solid color clutch are always a safe bet. Classics are not only an easy choice for me this time of year, they tend to get lots of use throughout the rest of the year too. When you find timeless pieces, you find that it’s hard not to wear them to everything.

With only a couple weeks left before Christmas, and not long before the New Year, it’s the perfect time to find a great classic dress you can wear to all the events you have planned. I rounded up some of my favorite holiday dresses from Nordstrom below. Each of them is unique, classic, and perfect for any holiday party, church event, or get-together you have planned.

When Garrett and I were first married, we were typical poor college students. I had just graduated from college, and Garrett was just starting his second year of undergrad, planning on attending Law school after getting his four year degree. Garrett had saved for months and months to afford a wedding ring, and when he finally was able to purchase one he only had $0.53 remaining in his bank account. He didn’t tell me this until months later, and I couldn’t believe all of the hard work, love, and sacrifice that went into being able to afford my ring (I honestly couldn’t make this stuff up).

We welcomed Bradley into our family only a few years after getting married, and I quit my job to stay home with him. We lived on a really tight student budget, and I remember lots of birthdays and anniversaries where we decided to just give a card and forego an extravagant gift.  Even when we only exchanged cards, Garrett made a point to always buy me a PAPYRUS card. Getting a PAPYRUS card to us meant that it was an occasion special enough to splurge a bit on a beautifully crafted card (even if that was the only item that was given). Each year he picks out a card that fits me/my style perfectly. My wedding ring was important enough to him to spend literally almost every penny he had, and since then, the special cards have shown me how important special milestones and events in our lives are to him. We recently celebrated his birthday, and I was able to find the perfect PAPYRUS card for him!

I love our 10 year long PAPYRUS card tradition. PAPYRUS has helped make our special occasions more meaningful. Not only are their cards a step above, but they also just launched a holiday entertaining line that will elevate any holiday party or gathering! The same intricate details used in their cards are also in their holiday pom pom banners, party picksnapkins, and dessert plates.  If you are planning a holiday party, or have a special event during the holidays, this new line is definitely worth checking out!
