GOLDEN MERMAID COSTUME TUTORIAL

For Halloween this year our family did an ‘Under the Sea’ theme (you can view the post with our family pictures here). I loved how my mermaid costume turned out! It was really simple and if you watch my snapchat, you saw me start this costume at 11:30pm the night before 😉 What can I say, I work better under pressure! I listed the tutorial for my costume and all the links to my hair/jewelry/make-up details below..

I found the most perfect mermaid inspired earrings here.

I wanted to do a different mermaid costume than the typical Ariel mermaid, and didn’t want to go too literal with the seashell bra, so I kept this one pretty simple and just let the fabric do the talking. I originally wanted to do a silver top, but I found this gold lame at Jo-anns and it was too good to pass up. My hair/makeup details are below, and then follow the jump at the bottom of this post for the full sewing tutorial for how to make this simple mermaid costume!

DROP EARRINGS
LUXY HAIR EXTENSIONS (I used the 24″ extensions in Beach Blonde and had my hairdresser darken them a bit to match the darker parts of my hair.)
TOPSHOP CHAMELEON GLOW HIGHLIGHTER (I used this on my eyes and on top of my lipstick. I’m OBSESSED with this!)
TOPSHOP ALL OVER HIGHLIGHTER (I used this on my chest, the tip of my nose, forehead, and cheekbones. This highlighter made the whole look!
THE COLOR ‘COGNAC’ FROM THIS PALETTE (I used this darker bonze in the creases of my eyes)
THE COLOR ‘DIRTYSWEET’ COLOR FROM THIS PALETTE (In the middle and in the inner corners of my eyes)
MARY KAY GLOWING FINISH ILLUMINATING STICK (on my cheeks)
MAKEUP SETTING SPRAY (I swear by this stuff. I bought the biggest bottle and it keeps my makeup fresh and in place all day!)
MAC LIPLINER IN ‘BOLDLY BARE’ (I colored in my lips with it and wore it as my lipstick. It’s my favorite liner color right now)
MATTE BRONZER (This bronzer is so good and so cheap! Its under $5 and its my daily bronzer)

DALMATIAN PRINT PENCIL SKIRT TUTORIAL

I tend to get on a color palette kick, and pair the same colors in a look together over and over for a few weeks. Recently I have been loving black, white, and cognac. I made this skirt months ago and have worn it on several occasions. I tended to just stick with black shoes with the skirt, but I found these great cognac lace up block heels at Payless and I love the look of them paired with the skirt. I grabbed this soft cognac cashmere cardigan and this fun tassel crossbody bag, and I love how the color combination turned out! The tassel on the bag mixed tie in nicely with the small tassel ties on the lace up sandals. I’m also excited about the price of these sandals! I’ve seen other pairs that are very similar but at a much higher price point.

Knit pencil skirts are one of my favorite things to make. They are so great to throw on when it is really hot outside and I can’t even think about trying to wear jeans. POM POM KAFTAN TUTORIAL

For my recent girls weekend trip to the Beverly Hilton, I wanted to make a cute simple swim coverup for the pool. It was so easy to wear AND easy to make! I’ve included the full tutorial for how to make this same coverup at the bottom of this post!

For this project I was inspired by OtterBox’s cute phone cover that was designed by Project Runway: All Stars winner, Dom Streater. I loved the fun bright coral pink in this case and found this exact shade in a recent trip to Mood Fabrics in downtown LA. This case is fun and eye catching, and since a clothing designer developed the case, I thought it would be fitting to design and style my own piece of clothing to go with it! OtterBox Symmetry Series cases are always the best at protecting my phone.

THE MODERN GIRLS HALLOWEEN WEEK ROUNDUP

It’s been so much fun sharing our Modern Girls Halloween with with you! We hope we’re inspired you to get creative this Halloween and try your hand at making your costume.
