LAZER CUT PEACH DRESS | CREAM LEATHER JACKET | SIMILAR FRINGE SANDALS

I love getting dressed up in something fancy for a nice dinner date or event. Now that the nights are starting to cool off, that means that I’ll also have to throw on a jacket at some point in the evening. I’m usually sweating in my bedroom trying to get ready for a date and always hesitate about bringing a jacket. I’ve tried so many times to go out without a jacket on a fall night (especially when we lived up in Utah), and I always ended up cold and miserable. But sometimes it’s hard to have to cover up a pretty dress! Now there is nothing that kills a great dress faster than the wrong jacket. If they aren’t paired correctly, that pretty dress could end up getting hidden or take a back seat to the jacket.

I’m obviously not suggesting to get a jacket to wear specifically for one dress, but I do have a few tips on things to look for when pairing a jacket with a nice dress.

  • Let one piece do the talking: If your dress is patterned (or has intricate detail like my dress), pair a solid colored jacket with it. If you have a gorgeous bright jacket or one that demands attention, opt for a simple black dress to wear under it. Either way, make it clear who the hero piece of the look is. If they aren’t properly balanced, both the dress and the jacket could end up looking over the top and loud instead of understated and sophisticated.
  • Mimic the scale of the jacket to the scale of the dress: If you are wearing a loose shift dress, pair it with a knee length pea coat or looser trench coat. If it’s a body-con dress, go for a shorter leather jacket, or something that fits a little more snug so that your curves are still accentuated.
  • Think about fabric quality: I always try and pair a jacket that has similar quality fabric to my dress. If the dress is made out of higher quality fabric like silk, I opt for a wool pea coat so that the fabrics match in quality. A black leather jacket would pair perfectly with a thick Ponte knit dress, and a lighter casual cotton voile dress would pair best with a casual denim jacket. If you wouldn’t wear sneakers with your cocktail dress, remember to bump up your jacket quality too!

I searched for a while on Zappos for the right jacket to pair with this dress. I ended up ordering 2 jackets to try on with the dress. The free fast shipping and returns always make it well worth it for me to place a quick order online and send back any items that don’t end up working.

Here’s to warm jackets and cool autumn nights!

MY FAVORITE PINK LIPSTICKS FOR SPRING

BOTTOM LEFT: ‘SCHIAP’   BOTTOM RIGHT: ‘RETRO MATTE’

I have a million pink lipsticks, but every year around this time I go on the hunt for the perfect pink to wear for spring (last year my pick was MAC ‘lovelorn’). So a few weeks ago, I had an hour to myself and I rushed down to Nordstrom’s beauty department and went on the hunt for the best pink lipsticks out there right now. I tested out a ton in the store, and brought a bunch home with me just to make sure I got the right ones.

The winners were: NARS Claudia, MAC Saint Germaine, NARS Schiap, and MAC Retro Matte. I broke down what I loved about each one below (and which one is my very favorite)…

MAC Saint Germaine: This is a gorgeous light purply pink that is creamy with a light sheen. If you want more of a matte, just blot your lips with a tissue lightly and it will make for a pretty matte without drying out your lips. I’ve tried a lot of light pinks but they end up looking too white on me. The undertone of purple in this one adds just the right amount of depth so that it doesn’t look too light. I also love this color on brunettes!

NARS Claudia: This one is hands down my favorite. I’ve wore it almost every day this week! See here and here. I am obsessed with this pink/purply orchid color this year, and I especially love it in a lip color! Its bold, but not too bold. Sometimes I line my lips with my Mac lipliner in ‘Boldy Bare’ and that deepens up the color a bit. I’ve often wondered if NARS lipsticks were worth the higher price tag, and this lipstick is such great quality! It goes on matte (which I love), but by the end of the day, I still have nice even coverage. Lots of mattes wear off leaving a line inside your lips or around the edges of your lips. I don’t even feel like I need to wear lipliner with this one either; it’s so highly pigmented. If you want to invest in a great, everyday pink- go with this one!

NARS Schiap: This pink packs a punch! It is a true fuchsia, which I think looks good on so many different skin tones. It is super bright, but not obnoxious. Such a fantastic bright pink lip!

MAC Retro Matte: Isn’t this one pretty?? This is the only true “matte” that I grabbed, and the color is so amazing. It’s a deep pink, but definitely not a red. I was afraid it would look more red/orange because the tube itself is pretty red, but it’s definitely a dark pink. This is a perfect alternative to a bright red lip for date night!

Aren’t they such pretty colors? I wanted to pick the best out of every variation of the color pink. Which one is your favorite?

A MONOCHROMATIC VALENTINE

photography by Kendra Maarse

In high school, I thought pink and red could never be paired together. But with the right shades of pink and red, I absolutely love it. The deep burgundy and soft blush are just the right shades to compliment each other. This is a little more sophisticated take on wearing all red or all pink for Valentine’s Day.

You can see the full video tutorial for how I created this braid on my Youtube channel here!

3 TIPS ON HOW TO DRESS FOR A CASUAL VALENTINES DATE NIGHT

*photography by Kendra Maarse Photography
While I love to get dressed up for date night (I’m talking hair, makeup, dress, heels, statement jewelry…the whole nine yards), there is also something so refreshing about a casual look for a night out with Garrett. Casual dressy is great because you never have to worry about looking like you are trying to hard (which is so easy to do if you aren’t careful).
I love to envision myself going out to a super fancy restaurant wearing something super fancy…but lets face it. Not all Valentines Day dates require formal dresses. So if you are planning on heading to a restaurant with a more casual vibe, or having a night out with your girlfriends for Valentines, here are a few tips for keeping your look festive but casual for the 14th.
PANTS ARE ALWAYS A SAFE BET
Many times you can feel a little too over dressed in a skirt or dress, but you are almost always safe in a great pair of jeans.  They are easy to dress up or down, even with some distressing.  These jeans are my absolute favorite pair to wear right now. Just ask my kids…they see me wear them everyday. Just enough distressing right at the knee (making it easy to kneel down and play with my kids without making the holes bigger). Worth every penny!
MIX CASUAL WITH DRESSY
A silk blouse or lace top might be what you would expect to see on Valentines, but I love this embroidered sweatshirt as an option! It has a pop of pink and beautiful detailing, but the sweatshirt keeps it cool and understated. The right heels and bag kick the look up just enough to justify date night worthy.
OPT FOR A PONY INSTEAD OF GLAMOUROUS CURLS
I feel the prettiest when my hair is down and curled..but sometimes a low messy pony just feel so much cooler. It’s the easiest way to make sure you don’t look like you’re trying to hard. A pony is both casual and chic and works perfect for a casual Valentines date. (or you can opt for a high pony which I wore in this post or a low messy bun in this post)

Also, I just wanted to thank you all so much for your excitement and kind words about the launch of my new Youtube channel! It has been so much fun reading all of your ideas and requests for videos and I can’t wait to show you what I have in store.  Make sure you head over and subscribe to my channel for a chance to win a $100 Nordstrom gift card!

SCALLOPS AND PLEATS

You just have to believe me when I tell you that this skirt is even better in real life. It looks pink and shimmers gold, and the pleats give it the most beautiful texture. Since it’s the first day of February and we are getting close to Valentine’s Day, I’ve been adding lots of pink hues to my wardrobe. And how darling is this scalloped top? The shorter boxy top balances well with the long straight midi-length skirt. I love that they each have something unique about them, but the scallops and pleats aren’t fighting each other for attention. This would be such a perfect Valentine’s date night look!

IN BETWEEN

Welcoming in fall with a few shades of olive. It’s still crazy hot in Southern California, so pairing a vest and booties with a skirt and tee help look like you are dressing for fall while still dressing for warm weather. Have a great weekend!

ALL ABOUT EASE

DRESS: HARPER & BAY (C/O) (DRESSES ARE CURRENTLY ON SALE OVER AT KICKSTARTER) | PERFORATED FLATS (SIMILAR HERE) | DIAPER BAG | NECKLACES HERE AND HERE, BRACELETS HERE, HERE AND HERE
We have been going through the most ridiculous heat stroke for the past few weeks here in Southern California. It’s been crazy hot and really humid for our area. I thought it was bad being pregnant in all this heat (and it was!), but having a newborn and being always on the go is much harder in the heat than I expected! Trekking up and down the hill with my stroller for school drop offs, days at the park, and errands around town can leave me so hot and miserable.  To make matters worse, now that I am nursing, all of my cool sundresses that I wore everyday are now no longer options in my closet! I am constantly nursing on the go, but have had to wear pants with a top or button-up in order to be able to nurse in public, and it is just so crazy hot! No way am I hiking my entire dress up to nurse in public (although….at times I’ve seriously considered it). I just discovered Harper and Bay’s new line of nursing friendly dresses, and they are game changers! Finally, a nursing friendly dress that is actually cute and on trend! I’ve seen my fair share of nursing dresses, but just can’t bring myself to wear them. They scream “I’m Nursing!” too much to me. But I’d wear these dresses even if I weren’t nursing.
This raglan dress is my favorite because the fabric is super soft and the zipper along the sleeve makes it so easy to nurse Eli in public.  The side-ruching is also great for my post baby body (a must for before and after a baby) I was also really tempted to get their swing dress. They are having a sale on all of their nursing friendly dresses over on kickstarter now until October 1st. After that date, the prices will go back up, so run and snag yourself one at this great price!

If you don’t follow me over on Instagram you are probably wondering about the radio silence these past few weeks. My sweet baby Eli Garrett Barlow was born on the 6th of August and I have been loving every moment of this sweet newborn heaven. He is better than anything I could have dreamed of and he is the perfect addition to our family!

I hope to get his birth story up on the blog soon, but I did want to pop in and share my very last maternity look. This one I shot 3 days before I gave birth, so its as close to full term as you’re gonna get! This dress is one of the few maternity dresses I purchased during this pregnancy and I love love it.  I wore it to my birthday dinner with some of my girlfriends. The material is thick scuba-like fabric and I love the florals. I am really going to miss being able to wear it now that I’m not pregnant!  A lot of the sizes are already sold out, but there is an almost identical dress in plenty of sizes here, and one very similar that is non-maternity here!

Thank you for all of your kind words and congratulations. I am soaking up these first few precious weeks as much as I can!

I love wearing this printed “dress” as a top. The cut of it is so full and fun. And these nude flats have been a lifesaver for church and places where I would normally wear my nude pumps. I still wear head every once in a while, but I’ve definitely had to tone it down! Waddling in pumps is much more difficult than just normal walking. Also, if you are pregnant and on the hunt for good maternity white pants, I have loved these distressed white jeans, and right now they are 50% off! (still tons of sizes available) Happy Wednesday everyone!

I could not be more excited that blush is such a hot color for spring. It was one of my wedding colors and I have always loved how soft and feminine it is. It isn’t an overwhelming color, so in my opinion it can’t really be overdone. Hence my blush heels, top, and bag. I also found the perfect blush nailpolish by OPI (you can find it here). I got gel nails in this exact shade and loved it so much I bought the nail polish color.
There are lots of beautiful great blush pieces around, and many of them are on sale! See a few of my favorites below..
